Day Trip - Ancient Ayutthaya
Wander through spectacular ruins and marvel at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. No trip to Thailand is complete without this journey back in time to the stunning ancient Siamese capital of Ayutthaya.
Details
Preserved in history, Ayutthaya remains a magnificent site to be seen. As the ancient capital of Siam from 1350 to 1767, it was the crowning glory of a kingdom that grew to its largest geographical size, occupying much of modern-day Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and even some of Malaysia. During the 17th century it swelled to a population of more than 1 million. In 1767 it was sacked by Burmese invaders, forcing Thais to flee south and eventually establish Bangkok as the capital in 1782.
A short 70km minivan ride from Bangkok takes us to Bang Pa In, the site of a Summer Royal Palace and our pier for boarding a longtail boat. Enjoy a one-hour ride up the Chao Phraya River to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya. We'll visit a variety of ancient stone temples using van and Mary Poppins-style bicycles. The best thing about these stone palaces is there are no ropes, allowing you to get up close and personal with Ayutthaya's stunning temples. Along the way we'll enjoy an authentic Thai lunch and fill you in on lots of nifty historical facts. This intimate exploration of Ayutthaya gives you a genuine appreciation for the city's significance to the Thai people. At the conclusion of the day our private van will whisk you back to your Bangkok hotel. What a day!
Riding: 10km (paved roads), van support is provided for non-riders.

FAQs
How active will the day be?
This adventure features multiple modes of transport and is ideally suited to anyone who likes walking and has no major physical limitations. Great for adventurous souls of all ages.
What if it rains?
Our adventures run year-round, rain or shine. During the rainy season (July-Oct) it's a good idea to bring an umbrella and be prepared to get a bit wet. When it really pours we take shelter, enjoy a beverage and let it pass, which is usually quickly - then we'll continue exploring. It's a great experience to see a SE Asian rain shower up close!
Any dress requirements if we visit temples on this day trip?
When visiting temples it's important to dress respectfully. Be sure to bring: Footwear that has coverage of at least a strap around your heel; A short or long sleeved shirt (nothing sleeveless); and modest shorts or long pants.
I have trouble walking - is there another way to see the city's sites?
Absolutely, we can arrange for a private car to take you point to point. Bangkok automobile traffic can slow things down and may affect the number of sites you can visit during the trio. Let us know in advance and we'll be sure to make your trip perfect.
I don't cycle - is there another way to see the sites?
Absolutely, our private van will take you to the various stops along the trip. There's no need to ride a bike if you don't want to.
