Sometimes you need to escape the fast pace of life that is Bangkok.. Little do many travelers know that there are peaceful, semi-rural areas right in the city. Hop on a mountain bike and cruise the elevated walkways that make up Bangkok’s khlong (canal) system. Unknown to most visitors, Bangkok has a peaceful, almost hidden culture which lines the banks of the city’s khlongs. These fascinating, interconnected waterways are the lifeblood of many Thais, providing for their bathing, washing, fishing, transport and leisure.

Biking is quite possibly the best way to see an area and really get a true feel for it. No windows between you and the sights; the sounds and smells are right there, you can see, smell and taste the unusual mixture of laundry detergent, cooking oils, food of all types, fish and flowers. This is why mountain bikes are the perfect way to explore Bangkok’s khlong pathways.

Our day begins by taking us through a Muslim village, familiarizing ourselves with our bikes before embarking out on the elevated khlong walkways. These walkways are similar to sidewalks, only they are between one and two meters above the water below. We wind our way through the maze of pathways that stretch for thousands of kilometers throughout and beyond the city, trying to keep our eyes on the path ahead. Watch out for low-hanging bananas from nearby trees and keep an eye out for people fishing from the walkway. World-class photo opportunities abound and you will often feel like you are starring in your own adventure television special. Hand-built, wooden houses on stilts line the waterways, affording the rider a unique view into traditional Thai life. The odd longtail boat passes by as someone heads to a friend’s house or to market. Occasionally longtail boats knife through the waterway beside as locals head out to market. Perhaps the most amazing thing about these areas are the people. Locals who live along the khlongs are seen in their natural element. Very few foreigners are ever seen here and you certainly become an item of curiosity. Locals will try every bit of English they know and you will quickly understand why Thailand is known as ‘The Land of Smiles’.

This adventure is approximately four hours in length. Trips can leave in the morning or early afternoon. Read a tale about this adventure.
