No trip to Thailand is complete without a journey back in time to the incredible ancient capital of Ayutthaya. That would be like going to Egypt and not seeing the Pyramids!

As the capital from 1350-1767, Ayutthaya was the crowning glory of the Siamese Kingdom. During the 17th century it swelled to a population of more than 1 million, making it one of the world’s largest cities. During the Ayutthaya-era the country also grew to its largest geographical size, occupying much of modern-day Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and even some of Malaysia. Ayutthaya was finally sacked by the Burmese in 1767, which caused the Thais to flee south and eventually establish Bangkok as the capital in 1782. Preserved in history, Ayutthaya remains a magnificent site to be seen.

A short 90km minivan ride from Bangkok takes us to this UNESCO World Heritage Site where we’ll mount Mary Poppins-style bicycles and explore four of our favorite historical sites. The best thing about these stone palaces is there are no ropes, allowing you to get up close and personal with Ayutthaya’s stunning temples. Along the way we’ll enjoy an authentic ‘Isaan’ (northeastern Thai) lunch and fill you in on lots of nifty historical facts. This intimate exploration of Ayutthaya gives you a genuine appreciation for the city’s significance to the Thai people.

Riding: 20km (paved roads)

Today you'll visit:

  • Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon
  • Wat Phanan Choeng
  • Wat Chai Wattanaram
  • Wat Phra Si Sanphet
  • Other stunning stone palaces
Make sure you bring:

  • Footwear that has coverage of at least a strap around your heel
  • Shirt with at least as much coverage as a typical t-shirt
  • Modest shorts or light pants
  • Camera with plenty of film/storage space
