And the winner is… SA co-founder Scott Coates!
The envelope was opened and Scott was officially declared the winner of Alberta’s 2004 Provincial Award Celebrating Excellence (PACE). The award is given to an Albertan who has used their post-secondary education to grow a career while benefiting the global community. As such, Scott was whisked from Thailand and flown to Banff, Alberta, where he received the award from the province’s Lieutenant Governor Lois Hole, along with a $5,000CDN scholarship being set up in his name for Alberta students.
“What an incredible honour”, said Scott. “It’s great to see the work we do with SA is crossing borders and making waves the world over. I’m also very proud to dedicate the award to Bill Dieters, co-founder of Highland Farm and Gibbon Sanctuary who sadly passed away two years ago and deeply influenced my direction in life.”

We have a winner...

SA’s other co-founder, Daniel Fraser, recently co-starred in Thailand’s first digital motion picture, ‘The Garuda’. The film opened on April 1 to great reviews and a recent Fraser fan club being established in the kingdom. International releases are planned and we’ll keep you posted should it be in a theatre near you! Dan will have to wait until 2005 to receive his Academy Award. Read a story from the Calgary Herald about Dan’s big movie!

Thai Culture Your Culture
“Happy Birthday…so buy me a drink!” Huh? Unlike in the West where one’s birthday usually involves being treated for dinner and drinks by friends, in Thailand you’re expected to host your own birthday party – and foot the bill! It makes going to people’s birthdays lots of fun. Thankfully we only have our own special day once a year!

‘12-time contestant remains unbeatable’

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand
A chilli-eating contest in this north-eastern province yesterday sent one participant to the hospital, caused another to throw up and sent others scrambling for water to soothe inflamed throats.
The annual contest required contestants to eat 300 grams of fresh chillies within 12 minutes.
While onlookers cheered and whistled, the contestants didn’t quite seem to be enjoying themselves, some of whom quit half-way.
One woman who fainted during the contest was taken to hospital. She was discharged after treatment.
Chilli grower Prachuap Mungkratungklang, 42, took home the cash prize of 10,000 Baht after eating 230 grammes of fresh chillies within the allotted time.
This was the 12th time he had won such a contest. “I really love chillies and will attend every contest. No one can beat me,” Mr. Prachuap said.

Dish of the month

Hot and Tangy Cashew Salad
An appetizer served in Bangkok riverside cafes. This is especially popular in the hot season.

  • ½ kilo cashews, fresh or dry roasted
  • 8 fresh red and green chillies, sliced into small rounds
  • 6 fresh cherry tomatoes
  • 4 shallots, sliced into small wedges
  • ¼ cup dried shrimp (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon green peppercorns, fresh or bottled (but drained)
  • 3 tablespoons lime juice
  • salt to taste
Directions:
Roast the tomatoes in a hot oven until the skins blister and crack. Peel the tomatoes and set aside. Fry the cashews in a small amount of cooking oil until fragrant and golden. Take care not to burn them.
Toss all ingredients together. Pour yourself a long, cool beverage, sit back and enjoy. (The beverage is optional but will make your night much more fun)!

Snacks from the corner store and beyond...
The season has come for one of Thailand’s greatest roadside treats – soft mango and sticky rice smothered in sweet coconut milk! Thirty Baht ($0.80US) gets you a single serving on most busy street corners around the country!
