The General appointed a new president and new ministers, (all with a military background) and seems to have a “business as usual approach” although it’s still very early days to know what’s going to happen.

There were no casualties and some of the people arrested yesterday were released today, or put under house arrest. It’s quiet in Yangon and elsewhere in the country. It has been clear by the people’s response that they do not support this coup and feel angry, frustrated and worried for Aung San Suu Kyi and for the democracy Myanmar country has carefully built up over the last years. It feels that in one go, the military put the country back many years and people realize the results will be disastrous for their dreams, the economy, freedom and all other values they have strived for.

The so-called reason for the coup was alleged voter fraud but that seems very farfetched.

People in Myanmar are protesting online and calling for specific targeted boycotts from within the country for business owned by the military. They want to send a message to the military and their families or supporters that they don’t agree with the coup. A civil disobedience movement has started and seems to be gaining followers as a peaceful way to show the military they don’t agree with the coup.

Living under the military for many years and under the Western sanctions, we do know that both are bad for the well-being of the people and do hope that somehow the coming days or weeks can reverse some of the things that happened yesterday.

Unlike other major cities in Southeast Asia (most notably, perhaps, Hanoi and Saigon), you won’t find a frenzy of two-wheelers and honking dominating the streets. The reason for this is a topic of some debate but most attribute the ban to a disgruntled military general seeking revenge on a bunch of motorbike drivers that made threatening gestures towards him on the road. Whatever the reason for the ban, it makes for an interesting change in urban pace.

After Yangon, we flew up to Mandalay where we stayed for just one night before beginning a weeklong motorcycle adventure. Though only limited time, checking out the former palace and taking in the sunset from Mandalay Hill are simply must dos (and we did). As we began our motorbike trip the next day (the first leg of which was a more than 200 km jaunt down to Bagan), we took a worthwhile detour to Mingun Pahtodawgyi; the so-called “Unfinished Temple”. It might just be the highest pile of bricks in the world, built in the late 18th-century and only comprising the foundation of what would have been a massive stupa.

Nearby we also saw the Hsinbyume Pagoda, known as the Taj Mahal of Myanmar, as it was built as a memoir of love by King Bagyidaw to his wife. The rest of the ride skirting along the Irrawaddy River down to Bagam was long, hot, and dusty … but we wouldn’t have it any other way as we discovered Myanmar in motorized style!

Insider Fact: One of the most unique experiences to partake in during a visit to Mandalay is the daily face-washing ceremony of a highly sacred Buddha image at the Mahamuni Pagoda. If you don’t mind getting up super early (or staying up super late?), head to the pagoda at 4:00 am to partake in this fascinating and deeply spiritual ritual. The idea is that the Buddha, just like everyone else, needs to start the day with washing his face and brushing his teeth. You won’t see many other tourists around, but lots of pilgrims and Buddhist monks from all over the country come to see this ritual on a daily basis.

If traveling was a video game then Bagan would be the final boss of ancient brick temples in Southeast Asia. Bagan consists of thousands of Theravada Buddhist monuments which were erected between the 10th and 14th centuries AD, at a time when the area was the political, economic, and religious seat of Myanmar’s powerful Pagan dynasty (Myanmar’s first unified Burmese Kingdom).

Indeed, Bagan is considered the world’s largest and densest concentration of Buddhist religious buildings. Dotted across the landscape are massive stucco-covered brickwork monastic complexes, as well as more modestly sized and small stupas and wats, some mere piles of rubble covered in thick shrubbery. It is the combination of all of these buildings – in varying stages of ruin, repair, renovation, and reconstruction – imposed on a vast and continuous landscape that gives Bagan its unique and seemingly timeless character. While we didn’t get those quintessential sunrise or sunset shots, a day spent on electric scooters exploring some of the thousands of stupas and pagodas scattered across a barren landscape was surreal.

There have been a myriad of books written about how travel provides an education that no school ever could. The basic idea is summed up in the famous quote “I never really started learning until I began to travel.”

Over the years the travel experience has embraced, rejected, created, and re-embraced many different identities, be it group tours, luxury travel, or thumbing your way from point A to Z. They all mean different things to different people.

But one that’s closest to our heart is travel defined by a concept known as ‘experiential learning’. The phrase was coined by David Kolb, an educational theorist (yes, that’s a thing) with a Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard.

There are many ways to experience Asia, but applying some of the techniques that drive the experiential learning theory is a great way to make sure the trip a) stays with you long after you leave and b) teaches you something valuable. Along with elements that are already Smiling Albino mainstays (such as small groups and an itinerary with plenty of time for self-guided exploration), Kolb’s four elements of experiential travel are:

Concrete experience

Observation and reflection

Formation of concepts

Testing the new concepts

Concrete experience? Check. Indeed, that’s what Smiling Albino is all about. We’ve long urged our guests to step out of their comfort zone, try something new, or do something that allows them to see a place or experience from a different angle. Whether it’s pushing yourself to crest the final ridge on an uphill bike ride in Nepal, or eating fried bugs on the steamy streets of Bangkok, creating concrete, unique experiences is in our DNA.

But as hosts we can only open the door – the next three steps are up to you. If it helps, other researchers expanded on Kolb’s ideas a bit to provide five questions you can ask yourself to help trigger the ‘learning’ part of experiential learning:

Did you notice that…?

Why did that happen?

Does that happen in my life?

Why does that happen?

How can I use that to my advantage?

It might sound a little counter-intuitive, applying mental analytics to a trip, but trust us – when you analyze the pieces of an adventure, there’s a lot to learn about your trip – and yourself – that may not have been obvious before.

The post Experiential Learning first appeared on Smiling Albino.

Photo: The Smiling Albino sales team, Bangkok.

Like many industries, the travel and tour business is a lot like an iceberg – what you see is only a small fraction of the whole package. From a client’s point of view, most any service they pay for – be it getting a package from FedEx, sending a text on their phone, or paddling a sea kayak into a limestone cave – is just one small part of a complex system that took a ton of planning and logistics to provide. That got us thinking – wouldn’t it be interesting to provide some insight into what exactly goes into a Smiling Albino trip?

In a four-part series, we’re going to take a look at the who, what, and how of crafting an Asian adventure, from the first contact email to the bittersweet hugs at the end.

Part IV: Wrapping up

Saying so long to a group that you’ve bonded with is always a bummer, no matter if it’s been a few hours or a few days. But we never like to leave things at goodbye, indeed, what comes after a trip is almost as important as what happens on the trip.

“Making sure the clients are happy with their trip actually starts while they’re on the trip,” says Kae Urai, Smiling Albino’s Operations Manager. “We are in constant contact with guides and hotels during the trip. We also make sure the clients know that the entire team is at their disposal if they need assistance. When the trip is over, we send the clients an online survey, and talk with the guides and driver to see what they thought were the highlights and where things could be elevated. That’s how we make incremental improvements each time.”

This can include a multitude of things – good hotels gone off their game or restaurants that have changed their operating hours, beaches that have become too crowded, itineraries that are too rushed (or not rushed enough), etc. A trip log is created for each trip and shared with all staff members so that everyone is aware of it.

But while defining a ‘successful’ trip can vary from person to person, Kae says it’s based on several standard metrics. “Happy clients usually give good feedback, book multiple trips, or tell their friends to try us on their next trip. Other hallmarks of a generally successful trip are happy stakeholders – guides, drivers, and office staff. When you start to combine those things you can get a pretty good indication of how a trip went off.”

And of course we like to stay in touch with our clients long after the trip is done. The Smiling Albino newsletter goes out bi-monthly, and every once in awhile they might find a birthday card or postcard for no reason – just to say hi!

“One of our values is that we want our clients to feel they have been hosted by a family or friends on a Smiling Albino trip,” says Kae. “We make them feel they are special even after the trip is done. We want their friends to be jealous of their experience with us so that when their friends or colleagues ask for travel recommendations, the first name that comes to mind is Smiling Albino.”

The post Behind the Scenes of a Smiling Albino Trip – Part 4 first appeared on Smiling Albino.
